PRESS RELEASE – A hat trick by Jamaica captain Khadija Shaw helped sink Grenada in the opening match of the CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship, Caribbean Zone Group 2.

Playing at the Mindoo Phillip Park in Castries, Saint Lucia, the Reggae Girlz kicked off against the Spice Girls from 4pm on Sunday, 26 July.

Needing to place in the top two to guarantee advancement to the regional finals in Haiti, Jamaica got off to a flying start before a small crowd.

Rasha Roberts scored in the fourth minute to put Jamaica up 1-0, a score that held until halftime. Three minutes into the second period, Shaw got on the board for the first time. But it was just the latest strike in her prolific career.

Just 18 years old, Shaw has been playing for the Under-20’s since she was 14 years old. Better known as ‘Energiser Bunny’ the former St Jago student is on her way to take up a scholarship at Navarro College in Texas.

10 minutes after her first goal, Shaw scored again. Clearly behind the game, Grenada kept Jamaica at bay until the penultimate minute of regulation, substitute Asia Lee-Fatt making it 4-0, before Shaw sealed the win in the third minute of time added on.

Jamaica have Tuesday off, as Grenada plays host nation Saint Lucia. On Thursday, Jamaica closes out their first-round campaign against Saint Lucia. All matches are from 4pm.
