PRESS RELEASE – Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Kenny D. Anthony is surprised by recent accusations emanating from the United Workers Party, questioning the validity of unemployment figures for 2015.

In the view of the Prime Minister, “it is evident that Allen Chastanet is seeking to bring the honour and integrity of the Central Statistics Office into disrepute.”

According to recently published data, the rate of unemployment decreased from 23.5% in the third quarter to 20.6% in the fourth quarter of 2015.

The 20.6% unemployment rate was driven by 5,000 more jobs created from the fourth quarter of 2015 when compared to the fourth quarter of 2014. It was estimated that 3,000 of these jobs were created in construction, 1,000 in the public sector and 1,000 in the accommodation and food service sector.

Prime Minister Dr. Kenny D. Anthony welcomes news that more persons are employed in jobs, especially in cases where the average work week exceeds 35 hours.

The Prime Minister also touts the success of programs such as the National Initiative to Create Employment (NICE) which, since its inception in June 2012, has proven to be a viable source of employment in the public and private sectors, as well as the Agro-Processing, Manufacturing and Creative Industries.

  1. Kenny. Hilaire. You have been measured. You have been weighed. You have been found wanting.

  2. Which offices did the Prime Minister bring into disrepute when he questioned the Growth Rate figures for 2010 and led his followers to call the Prime Minister the 'lying King'?

By the way, perhaps his perceived lack of leadership in the Public Service is because some seek to emulate him by using the 'big stick' strategy to pummel lower level participants into submission!

    • Read my comment over. I said he brought the integrity of the entire nation into disrepute because of his unexplained williness to protect Juffali. If he can question the growth rate figures then why can't the opposition question figures that appear to be inaccurate. He was willing to call the then PM the lying King but all of a sudden he has became the absolute Monarch. Let him properly explain the Juffali matter. His press releases so far concerning the Juffali affair appear to be insidiously directed to Juffali as opposed to clearly explaining the whole affair. He is a lawyer and his response of being surprised by the English Court's decision is foolish and naive. I mean is he really surprised or is he trying to tell Juffali that its not his fault. Why has he hired so many party hacks above longstanding public servants. Hillaire for example, is so arrogant, he has alot to explain about the Juffali mess and yet he was appointed to head CIP. What message does that send to public servants. We are the first country in the World to have a court revoke the immunity of one of our diplomats for perceived deception on one end or the other or on both who knows as the song says half the story has never been told. After all this you are still asking what office has the PM brought into disrepute. So now you see the light and stop asking sly questions.

    • By the way his percieved lack of leadership as you put it is more because he doesn't lead by example as opposed to the big stick strategy that you brought up. THERE IS AN AIR OF UNCERTAINITY THAT SURROUNDS HIS LEADERSHIP BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF TRUST AND LACK OF ACCOUNTABILITY OF HIS OFFICE. SINCE HE CREATED THIS SITUATION WHAT DOES THIS SAY ABOUT HIM AS A LEADER WITH A PHD.

  3. KENNY IS SUCH A HYPOCRITE, JUST A FEW WEEKS AFTER BRINGING THE INTEGRITY OF THE ENTIRE NATION OF SAINT LUCIA INTO DISREPUTE BY REFUSING TO DISMISS JUFFALI OR TO AT LEAST REVOKE HIS IMMUNITY, HE IS NOW SO CONCERNED ABOUT THE INTEGRITY OF THE CENTRAL STATISTICS OFFICE. THIS IS EVEN MORE ALARMING BEARING IN MIND THAT KENNY HIMSELF HAS QUESTIONED THE INFORMATION COMING OUT OF THAT OFFICE. WHAT IS JADIA TRYING IN MY OPINION SHE IS DOING MORE HARM THAN GOOD CAUSE SHE HAS MANY OF US QUESTIONING THE HONOR AND INTEGRITY OF THE PM. IS HE REALLY SO SURPRISED? OR IS JADIA TELLING HIM THAT THIS PRESS RELEASE WILL HELP HIS RELECTION. AFTER ALL THE RECENT SAGA WITH JUFFALI MOST OF US FIND IT HARD TO BELIEVE THAT KENNY CARES MUCH ABOUT WHAT IS BEST FOR MOST SAINT LUCIANS. HE MUST ALSO BE VERY FOOLISH CAUSE WITH ELECTIONS LOOMING HE IS DESTROYING HIS OWN REPUTATION AND DESTROYING THE HONOR AND INTEGRITY.OF THE OFFICE OF THE PRIME MINISTER.

  4. Kenny did it to king and laugh and say the statistical office mess King up. The othere day Kenny told St. Catherine who authorize him to give out information. The thing is everything kenny accuses someone of bet he has done it

  5. Dr Kenny it's not just chastenet that is confused. Even the president of the employers association have not seen the figures that was given to the public. U always appalled when u cannot give us the right figures.

  6. SLP are past masters of almost hourly simply shooting share. With nothing of substance to say, the past 13 months have seen its so-called leadership listing from one disaster to another. Entertaining a falling Maduro and having a foreigner interfere in local politics are their best efforts.
The so-called leadership, aware that it is becoming more and more unhinged each passing day, to catch the attention of the stupid, has resorted to do the expected political baby babble.
So these are their better days?

  7. All those stunned by the latest unemployment figures wouldn't have wanted to hear anything about validity, independence and truthfulness etc had it indicated unemployment had increased. Now the indication is not what they expected they will utter all manner of absurdities to rubbish the report of the statistical office. Not under the control of the SLP I hope this office remain independent and non-partisan bot in word and in deed.

    • Finally someone with common sense!!!

      (0)(19)
    • How about you use some common sense.

3,000 construction jobs for which projects exactly. Dayana in town? Courts Mega Store in Marisule. You can combine all these projects and they will not total 3,000 new jobs. 1,000 in public sector i.e. Nice. Is that meaningful employment or yet another welfare programme. And 1,000 in tourism. Are those seasonal workers? Didn't a few hotels shut down? Everyone is claiming reduced occupancy and visitor numbers so who hires those. Let's not forget none of those jobs are permanent and we only recorded 0.5% economic growth. No amount of Kennynomics or voodoo economics would lead to such a drastic decline in unemployment with such a paltry growth rate. You know Antigua & St. Kitts grew by 2.2% and 4.6% for the same period? Ask them what happened to unemployment numbers.

The wonderful thing about numbers is that you can make it say whatever you want. Here's an example. A percentage of Kenny's heart is in the right place. 0%. See! Dig further and you will get the truth. Stop BSing the people.

  8. Why Allen Chastanet? With the exception of your hack (nb. Not all labours are hacks) everyone, not just Chastanet, is confused at this report. Job are still being lost. Private businesses are closing and you are saying that there was a decrease in unemployment? Were the 5000 job created by the public sector. The same sector the IMF asked to decrease? That is what expected from the opposition leader. Not going among the fishermen, whiles in opposition, and asking government to "pay them their money" and now you are in government you are doing to them, worst than the previous government. Going to the the gates of the over 50% completed St Judes hospital, with a meeting, whiles in opposition, protesting against the uncompleted hospital, now you in government for over 4 years now and the same St Judes Hospital is still incomplete. You really believe St Lucians are fools,

  9. The Government's statistical office is the one that tarnished and besmirched its own reputation by publishing erroneous or highly questionable GDP growth rates in the past. Like this SLP administration, The organisation does not behave as though it has the maturity to understand that it will require a long phase of "damage control" to RE-estatblish respect. The impact of another embarrassing issue is the juallfi affair as another case in point.

How can any responsible institution report 15% GDP growth rate, only to revise that downwards to 3 or 5 percent afterward?. What were they thinking?

All reasonable actors would have refrained from using KNOWN dubious methodology or data sources as inputs, and/or would have placed a HUGE "PROVISIONAL" label upon publication of that information. But one has to ask this. What value is the publication of such statistics, when end-users of that information would be making decisions that are based on erroneous data. GIGO. They should know that for decision making, "Garbage In; Garbage Out".

Saint Lucian elites are just too darn flippant.

  10. This PM is always "appalled" or "surprised". Ooops! I forgot "saddened"

    (46)(1)
  11. Lawd help us! The roro communications director is at it again. SLP really fall oui. Jadia rise up above that roro declasse level and stop with the maypwee press release. It is getting stale now.

When will Kenny man up and address the pressing issue of the alleged bobol by a rogue official in London, the ARTFICIAL CONSTRUCT of Walid Juffali, IMPACS, Grynberg and the other important issues of youth unemployment, poor health care services and high levels of Nepotism that his government is guilty off?

Every time this man opens his mouth he is either appalled, surprised, shocked – like Alice in wonderland.

Get real Kenny – you have run out of ideas to fool us. Get lost!

    (148)(0)
  12. No wonder the county is in such a mess. You are always surprised. Have you been asleep that long and no one suspected? Kenny, you are certainly a world class actor -a ferret asleep on the stage. We have intelligent people in St. Lucia who must now stand up you and you just can't handle it.

Wake up! Smell the coffee and be prepared to take a long walk into the darkness where you belong.

    (76)(2)
  13. Kenny u started bringing that office into disrepute when as opposition leader u told then pm Stephenson king not to trust information from that office or public servants in general. Now that Mr chastenet is questioning statistics from that office don't pretend that they r beyond reproach. U started it. And I agree with Mr chastenet because I can't see those 5000 jobs. Besides I'm sure those 5000 jobs went to SLP supporters and they relatives.

    (77)(2)
  14. They are all your hacks PM!!

    (36)(1)
  15. Is this guy KDA for real? His utterances over the years and especially over the last couple of months have me questioning the state this guy's mental health.
When the figures are not in his favour he bashes the statistics department and when the figures are cooked in his favour he threatens
to take critics to court in the defence of the department.

    (41)(0)
  16. Mr. PM forgetting that you had already done that yourself why should you be surprised that anyone did it after? However, my purpose here is not primarily to highlight your recurring debilitating bouts of amnesia. My questions quickly:

As we understand that these figures primarily deals with jobs created, Does it take into consideration the amount of jobs lost when computing the figure for the period?

Is this figure a primarily a comparison between 2014 and 2015 final quarters? If it is, then its like bullshitting us.

Last observation. If the government could employ 1000 workers wouldn't that be a sort of welfare program, a burden to the tax payer, the very same counter-productive schemes that we are trying avoid? Do the math, the public pays more taxes to create more jobs.

You mentioned 3000 jobs were created in construction, this is 3000 more jobs in comparison to what period. Because as far as i am concerned there has always been construction even during the UWP's TI Canal era. Is it 3000 more jobs than you had created for your past 4 years in office. If thats the case, then you should hve made it a cool 5000.

    (39)(0)
  17. Do not be surprise by anything Chastanet say.He suffers from verbal diarrhoea. most of us are not stupid.Do not be afraid. He is political leader of the opposition what do you expect from him, praise you?

    (4)(112)
  18. opps!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kenny Don't try that. Tell me about Jufali, Gynberg and the rest. There is no way that these figures are true, even your STEP program and cutting grass persons are part of the statistics. Man you too bold face.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    (48)(1)
  19. Allen Chastanet and the UWP never said that the figures given by the Stats Dept for the 4th quarter of 2015 were untrue. What they did day was that over, unemployment in 2015 had increased over 2014, which is indeed true. So please stop trying to distract people... And try to find some sustainable and not just seasonal jobs for people.
