“I loved my previous life. I had so many things going,” Trump admitted to Reuters in an interview about his first 100 days in office. “This is more work than in my previous life. I thought it would be easier.”
The business tycoon-turned-president reminisced wistfully about his old life, when he could actually drive a car and not be whisked everywhere in a limo.
“I like to drive,” he said. “I can’t drive anymore.”
He said he had been accustomed to not having privacy as a reality TV star and real estate mogul — but expressed astonishment at how much less he has as commander-in-chief.
And he said he was still getting used to having 24-hour Secret Service protection and its associated constraints.
“You’re really into your own little cocoon, because you have such massive protection that you really can’t go anywhere,” he said.
Trump also still has the 2016 presidential election very much on his mind. He has recently claimed he would “still” beat Hillary Clinton in the popular vote, despite losing it by more than 2.8 million votes to the Democratic candidate.
During a discussion about Chinese President Xi Jinping, Trump paused to hand out copies of what he said were the latest figures from the 2016 electoral map.
“Here, you can take that, that’s the final map of the numbers,” he said in the Oval Office, handing out maps of the US with areas he won marked in red. “It’s pretty good, right? The red is obviously us.”
The president also said he’ll attend next year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
“I would come next year, absolutely,” he said when asked whether he would attend in the future after deciding to skip this year’s event in Washington on Saturday because he felt he had been treated unfairly by the media.
Trump has previously admitted being taken aback by the complexity of his job.
In February, he sounded surprised by how complicated health care laws are during his bid to repeal and replace ObamaCare.
“Now, I have to tell you, it’s an unbelievably complex subject,” he added. “Nobody knew health care could be so complicated.”
