Six blasts rocked the Indonesian capital around 10:30 a.m. near the Sarinah shopping mall.
Witnesses reported that at least one suicide bomber blew up during the chaos, and there were believed to be other attackers who exchanged gunfire with security forces.
Indonesian authorities said five of the assailants had been shot dead. It was not immediately clear if others were involved.
Two civilians, one thought to be a foreigner, were also reported dead after the area was locked down by Indonesian security forces.
