Hurricane Alex was located about 130 miles (210 kilometers) south of Terceira Island in the central Azores as of 5 a.m. AST Friday. The Azores are a group of Portuguese islands located 800 to 900 miles west of Portugal’s mainland.
Maximum sustained winds were estimated to be 75 mph, making Alex a Category 1 hurricane.
Satellite imagery now indicates the convection around the center of Alex has weakened, but the inner core is still intact. Hurricane-force winds extend up to 25 miles from the center.
The Azores Meteorological Service has issued a hurricane warning for the islands of Faial, Pico, Sao Jorge, Graciosa, and Terceira in the central Azores. In addition, a tropical storm warning is in effect for the islands of Sao Miguel and Santa Maria in the eastern Azores.
