INTERNATIONAL: Falkland Islands in Argentinian waters, United Nations rules

Falklands06INDEPENDENT (UK) – The United Nations has expanded Argentina’s maritime territory to include the waters surrounding the Falkland Islands.

This decision by the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf was welcomed by Argentina, and gives the country fresh impetus in its continued claims to the British overseas territory.

It will increase the size of Argentina’s territory in the South Atlantic by 35 per cent, but members of the islands’ legislative body have expressed concern over the control of natural resources found in the surrounding waters.

Oil exploration has been injecting millions into the economy in the Falklands, which was previously used for farming and strategic military purposes.

Mike Summers, chairman of the Legislative Assembly of the Falkland Islands, said: “Our understanding has always been that the UN would not make any determination on applications for continental shelf extension in areas where there are competing claims.”

  1. The UN is a useless club that has allowed millions and millions to die, that organization has no teeth. China and Russia vetoes everything...and don't forget the US voting against resolutions, just to protect the Israelis whilst they murder countless Palestinians.

  2. Now Argentina has an excuse to invade the Falkland Islands (or Malvinas) and start a new Falklands War without fear of encountering Margaret Thatcher, the Iron Lady.

    • Argentina has a little bit more rights than just to invade the Malvinas. What is the UK doing there ? Who gave them the right to claim those Islands as theirs? Wouldn't you say it is fair enough that they lost those Islands the same way they acquired them?

Its time people like you open your eyes to the injustice that is being perpetuated in the name of whatever it is that gives those imperial countries the excuse to claim lands they covet. It is interesting to note the name and the name change. If Great Britain has to use the argument that when they settled in these islands there was no one there whats about those countries which they took by force often times to the near of total extermination of the indigenous population?

To put it simply there are many people with a case against Great Britain with good reason. So before you go about thinking that Argentina has an excuse to invade why don't you say Great Britain has the opportunity to make amends for its wrong deeds by relinquishing its claim to the Malvinas.
