Roof, 22, who was convicted last month of slaughtering nine worshipers at the historically black Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church during bible study in June 2015, stared straight ahead as the verdict was read.

The jury’s latest verdict concluded the penalty phase of his trial, during which the panel deliberated whether he should face capital punishment or life in prison without parole.

They also unanimously found that Roof inflicted seriously bodily injury and that he intentionally killed.

  1. You took that which was not yours to take.
You defiled that which was not yours to defile.
You think you will find reprieve in death?
You think you will find peace where the sleepless one waits?
As your sins tower to the heavens so will your screams bellow from the depths of pain and despair.
Your anger will be snuffed out. Your hope will be devoured. And your happiness will be smashed against the rocks.

You will find no peace where you are going. You will find no pity.
