NEW YORK POST – A brave 9-year-old New Jersey girl trapped by flames and smoke in her third-floor townhouse jumped from her balcony into the arms of cops below on Tuesday afternoon, according to a report.
Sofiya Doroshenko broke into tears when she began to recount her horrific experience in Mahwah, where flames tore through the top of the 24-unit building where she lives with her mom and stepfather.
“She’s very brave,” said her mother, Yulyia Doroshenko. “But she’s also in stress.”
The massive blaze erupted about 4 p.m. and damaged at least a dozen units in the Society Hill complex on Juniper Lane. The cause of the blaze was unclear.
The girl, who had been home alone when the fire broke out, tried to flee through a stairwell but choking smoke forced her back.
