India: Friend accidentally shoots groom to death at his wedding

By New York Post

(NEW YORK POST) – This is the shocking moment a newly married Indian man was fatally shot at his wedding, apparently by a stray celebratory round fired by a friend.

New groom Sunil Verma, 25, was celebrating his nuptials with a gathering of family and friends Sunday night in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh when the party took a horrific turn.

Video of the tragic incident shows Verma seated in a circle with a small group of guests as an orange-shirted man in the background — visible only from the shoulders down — fiddles with a handgun.

As lively music pulses, a pop can be heard and Verma flinches as attendees look around in confusion. Almost immediately after, a second shot rings out, and a muzzle flash is seen coming from the firearm in the orange-shirted man’s hand. Verma clutches both of his hands to his chest and his face twists with agony. Guests rush toward him, and Verma keels over as the clip ends.

The stricken newlywed died a short time later, according to The Times of India.

The shooter, identified by the paper only as Ramchandra, a close friend of the groom, initially fled the wedding-turned-crime-scene, but was nabbed Tuesday in a neighboring town, Indian police reported.

“He has confessed to the shooting, but the investigations will continue,” officer Ghanshyam Chaurasia told AFP. “We have recovered the murder weapon.”

Chaurasia added the death appeared to be a tragic accident but cops are still trying to piece together what happened.

“It appears that the groom was killed during the celebratory firing, but police are probing other angles, too,” he told the Times.

Police have traced the shots to Ramchandra’s registered gun and have booked him on murder charges, the paper reported.

Although technically illegal, celebratory gunfire is commonplace at weddings and other festive events in India. In fact, the same day as Verma’s death, a 20-year-old man was killed at his cousin’s wedding in the neighboring Allahabad district when attendees opened fire with live rounds. The shooter in that death is still on the run.

In February, the groom at a wedding in the capital of New Delhi was killed when he was struck by a stray bullet.
