The Saint Lucia Foundation of Texas, in recognition of our country’s 36th Anniversary of Independence, sends warm regards to Saint Lucians in the Greater Houston, Area, Texas and throughout the world. We in particular, send warm wishes and very best regards to our fellow citizens at home in our island Paradise, “The Helen of the West!”
It is not enough to say that we have achieved this important milestone; it is simply to say that through our 36 years of independence, our democracy has flourished; our island nation, through the hard work of our people, is recognized for our substantial contributions to the our world, in particular, our two Nobel Prize Laureates: Sir Arthur Lewis and Sir Derek Walcott.
Through our carefully crafted campaigns we boost the world’s number one honeymoon destination and is a favorite destination for tourist worldwide. We have weathered many storms and hurricanes with our strength, courage and resolve intact and undiminished. We are a strong vibrant people, who strive for excellence while remaining pure of heart and with a humble spirit.
Our “Helen of the West” has achieve much, and there is much more to accomplish. Our governments through the years have maintain a slow steady hand at the helm of our democracy, taking us to independence and safeguarding our freedom and liberties. Our nation is strong; our people transcends heart, passion, love of land and love of country: We are Saint Lucia!
So, as we pause to remember our day of independence, we reflect back on all who came before us during more challenging times, on whose shoulders we proudly stand to see how far as a nation we can go. And yes, we have much more to accomplish.
From March 1, 1967 as an Associated State of the United Kingdom, to independence from The United Kingdom in 1979; to economist Sir Arthur Lewis winning the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1979 to Sir Derek Walcott winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1992, to 2007 when two women were elected to Parliament for the first time.
Sarah Flood-Beaubrun was elected speaker of the 17-member House of Assembly, while attorney Rosemary Husbands-Mathurin, a first-time legislator, was voted Senate president. This and much more has distinguished our island nation from our neighbors and has brought us admiration and respect worldwide. And so, as we celebrate our independence with parades, festivals, galas and patriotic speeches from our leaders, let us again pause to remember those who came before us and whose shoulders we now proudly stand.
Happy Independence Day, Saint Lucia!
All The Best,
Peter Lyn René ,
