Micoud Hustlerz vs Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) 59-56 Final

Playoffs basketball is a dog-eat-dog time that only the strong, crafty, and resilient can survive.  The overtime rumble between the Micoud Hustlerz and the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force, Saturday night, was as much evidence of this as any.  A match that ended near midnightdue to moments of rainy weather.

No field goal was easy on the night, the 1st quarter ending 10-5 with the home team trailing.  In the 2nd quarter the Hustlerz found their groove, scoring 17 points behind a 9 point contribution by Canaan St. Catherine in the period.  At halftime, however, the Hustlerz still trailed 24-22.

In the 3rd the Hustlerz were on fire from behind the arc, scoring 4 consecutive 3-point field goals, 2 by Danie Moses, followed by another 2 treys from Canaan St. Catherine. The Hustlerz seized the lead and ended the period up 38-32.

A 6-0 run to start the 4th quarter brought the Police within 1 point of the lead 37-38 with 6:26 remaining.  It seemed the Hustlerz couldn’t even buy a basket in the 4th and with 3:58 remaining they were still scoreless in the quarter.  The Police increased their scoring run to 7 off a free throw by Tertullien to tie scores at 38, then a steal by Tertullien and score by Dantes gave the Police the lead 40-38 with just over 3 minutes remaining.

It was a 9-0 run by the Police and over 6 minutes of play before the Hustlerz could finally find a score.  St. Catherine was fouled on a 3-point attempt and converted 3-of-3 from the free throw line to tie scores at 41.

Police went on a mini run after, scoring 6 to Hustlerz 3 points, to gain a 48-44 lead with less than a minute remaining.  Hustlerz leading scorer, Canaan St. Catherine fouled-out with 19 points.

Their backs against the wall, Hustlerz made two steals and two field goals to tie scores at 48.  But a bad foul by young Danie Moses put Officer Tertullien at the line with 9 seconds remaining and a chance for the Police to take the lead and possibly win the game.

The Police, however, were terrible from the free throw line on Saturday night, the team scoring only 46 percent.  Tertullien, until then was just 36% (4-of-11) from the line.  He missed on both attempts, the Hustlerz gaining ball possession and a chance to win the game in 9 seconds.  Hustlerz Ricardo Charles got a good look at a trey but failed to convert.  Overtime!

In overtime a 7-2 Police scoring run after a Kurlinus Augustin trey gave them the lead 55-50 with less than 3 minutes remaining.  Hustlerz responded with consecutive scoring plays by Francois and Jay Deroses to close within 1, 54-55.

Both teams were still in penalty foul situation since the end of regulation time, and Tertullien getting fouled again went to the line, this time scoring the second of two free throws to increase the Police lead 56-54.  On the next play, Hustlerz Francois was fouled with less than 30 seconds remaining.  He scored 1 of 2 free throws to close within 1, 55-56.

A turnover by the Police gave Hustlerz the ball in their backcourt with 21 seconds remaining.  After evading full court pressure, Hustlerz point guard, Deroses, was fouled attempting to drive the ball down the middle of the lane.  He went to the line and was clutch on both free throws to give Hustlerz the lead, 57-56, 7 seconds of play remaining.

The Police gave the ball away on the subsequent inbounds pass, the Hustlerz converting the turnover to a layup to increase their lead to 3 points.  A rattled Police squad could do nothing more as time expired and an elated community celebrated a hard fought 59-56, Hustlerz win.
