PRESS RELEASE – The St. Lucia Agriculture Forum for Youth (SLAFY), together with its partners, the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and Consolidated Foods Limited (CFL), would like to announce that the HOOPSS Expository Fair and Closing Ceremony will be held at the Car park of the Sir Stanislaus James Building, Waterfront, on Friday 7th November, 2014, starting at 10:30 a.m.
The HOOPSS programme is a response to decreasing youth participation in agriculture and to date has assisted fourteen (14) schools in the establishment of their school farms. Participating schools have gained access through a partnership with Consolidated Foods Ltd and the St. Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association (SLHTA).
This programme has been in existence for the past four (4) years and has achieved tangible results. Schools have been able to see major improvements in the performance of students in the CXC Agriculture exam as well as an increase in the numbers of children desirous of working in the field of agriculture; not only as a subject but also as a profession.
The success of the HOOPSS project is due in no small part to the support given to SLAFY by CFL. The financial contributions made by CFL ensured that the programme was able to grow. They also brought sustainability to the programme by giving the schools a guaranteed market for their produce.
We would also like to thank the other companies and organizations whom along the way have contributed to the success of this youth initiative: The Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Education, Renwick and Company, SLHTA and the Travel Foundation (UK).
We would like to encourage the general public to come out and give support to the youth as they display, for all to see, the outcomes of positively engaging the youth and providing them with that much needed support and encouragement.
