PRESS RELEASE – According to Executive Coordinator for the United Nations Volunteers, Flavia Pansieri: “Volunteerism plays a significant role in achieving many of our goals in the development of our society.
We play a healing role by rebuilding trust in a post-conflict society. Our values – of solidarity and engagement – inspire us to live sustainably and our human actions do not jeopardize the needs or the existence of future generations.”
International Volunteer Day (IVD), celebrated annually on December 5th, was designated by the United Nations in 1985 as an international observance day to celebrate the power and potential of volunteerism. It is an opportunity for volunteers and volunteer organizations to raise awareness of volunteerism and gain recognition of the contribution they make to our Saint Lucian communities. The act of volunteering is found in all cultures, languages, and religions and uniquely in Saint Lucia, we refer to it as “Koudmen.”
Throughout the year, many Saint Lucians volunteer their time and skills to help make this country a better place. When they volunteer, they help to improve the lives of others. They also gain a greater sense of belonging to their communities.
On December 5th, Volunteer Saint Lucia will be celebrating volunteerism in a very special way. Not with rallies, parades, volunteer fairs, group clean ups, blood donations, conferences, exhibitions, fundraising, workshops and volunteer recognition events, but by reflecting on all the good that we as Saint Lucians have done through our sprit of Koudmen and the sense of pride derived from helping our country develop.
We at Volunteer Saint Lucia, “Koudmen Sent Lisi,” are very proud of our achievements as we bring the curtains down on a year of greatness.
We share the success of launching Volunteer Chapters in various communities and at Secondary Schools; in responding to our fire victims; supporting educational literacy and numeracy programs; tree planting and cleanup exercises; assistance to NGO’s and National Events such as Saint Lucia Jazz and Arts Festival, Carnival, Cricket etc. During the month of November 2015, Volunteer Saint Lucia participated in the inaugural hosting of the Caribbean Volunteer eXchange (CVX) programme in Trinidad and Tobago and was appointed the 2016 host country with Ms. Anya Edwin as the CVX’s Saint Lucia host Ambassador.
On Saturday December 5th, 2015 (International Volunteer Day), the Choiseul Chapter of Volunteer Saint Lucia will be assisting in the beautification of the Choiseul Library Children’s corner and other chapters will be engaged in various activities around the country. Volunteer Saint Lucia is extremely proud of the self launched “I Believe in Volunteering” group from Anse La Raye for their contribution to their community and the country.
This year, VSL launched a TV programme on NTN dubbed: “Volunteering with a Difference” which is aired on our National Television Network weekly, along with an active Facebook page to keep our members and supporters aware of our activities.
I encourage Saint Lucians to praise, love and appreciate all our National Volunteers and all Volunteer based organizations who give selflessly so others can benefit. I also want to encourage all volunteers to continue this trend of giving, keeping in mind that the Lord gave his only son to die for us, remembering that every time we volunteer, we are simply continuing a small part of Jesus’s work on earth.
On behalf of our Patron Her Excellency Dame Pearlette Louisy, our Prime Minister Hon. Dr Kenny D. Anthony and Volunteer Saint Lucia, I wish all Volunteers a Happy International Volunteer Day 2015. May God continue to Bless you and your families.
