PRESS RELEASE – The Belle Vue Development Committee would like to take this opportunity to extend Happy Birthday wishes to a true cultural icon and hero, Mr Joseph Rameau Poleon (MBE). We hope that the good Lord will continue to bless him with good health and the desires of his heart.
Joseph Rameau Poleon (MBE) was born on the 10th of July, 1929 in the community of Belle Vue, Vieux-Fort. His parents were Jolliffe Joseph Poleon, a famed fortune teller, and Tina Poleon. Rameau started playing the violin under the tutelage of his uncle Flood Poleon at the age of 15 years. His first public performance was at Laurenson’s Hall in Micoud. In 1979 he met with Eric Adley, a cultural activist and musician, and formed the Mount Gallion Folk Group. Together they performed at CARIFESTA 1981 in Barbados; and travelled to Europe, North America and the Caribbean.
Joseph Rameau Poleon (MBE) is considered one of the most pre-eminent folk musicians in the country. He is a two-time Best Violinist winner. He was awarded by the Governor General of St. Lucia in 2000 with the Saint Lucia Medal of Merit (Silver) for his meritorious contribution to Folk Arts. His most recent accolade is being awarded Member of the British Empire by Her Majesty the Queen in June, 2015.
Joseph Rameau Poleon (MBE) has made a resounding contribution to the cultural landscape of St. Lucia. His impact on the cultural fraternity is indelible. Thus, we thank him for helping us understand and appreciate the cultural heritage of our nation. Also, we are grateful for the contribution he has made towards preserving the cultural identity of St. Lucia.
