The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Northern Cluster Grass Roots Cricket Programme held a camp over the past weekend, in which 50 aspiring cricketers participated.
That number included five youngsters from the Mabouya Valley Cricket Development Programme.
The camp got underway on Friday 2 October and ended on Monday 5 October at the Beausejour Cricket Facility, covering a number of cricket developmental activities, lectures on conflict resolution and healthy lifestyles, morning walks, church service, and two cricket matches.
On Monday, players matched up in Under 13’s and 13-and-over at the Monchy Playing Field.
In the Under 13 match, the teams were led by Darren Sammy Jr and Olarry Alfred.
Alfred’s team made 171 all out in the 20th and final over, Sergio Auguste top scoring with a delightful knock of 69, including 11 fours and three sixes. For Sammy’s team, the skipper took three wickets for 20 runs, Shawniel Edward 2-24, Avalinus Calender 2-51.
In reply, Sammy’s team was dismissed for 70 in 12 overs, Lyndel Louis 15 and Qiana Joseph 10. Skipper Alfred was his team’s best bowler picking up 5-7 in 3 overs, Sergio Auguste 2-2, Udel Preville 2-13 and Denzel Roberts 2-18.
The older teams were led by Dominic Auguste and Stephen Mitchel.
Mitchel’s team made 120/2 in in 12 .2 overs, Kymani Sexius smashing an aggressive 95, which included five fours and 11 sixes, and Mitchel 15 not out. The wicket takers for Auguste’s team were national player Stavone Gabriel and Yhan Darius.
In reply, Dominic’s team ended on 30 for 2 in the seventh over when play was called off, with Dominic finishing on 15 not out. The wicket takers for Mitchel’s team were Zidane Arthur and Avalinus Calender with one wicket each.
