(KAIETEUR NEWS) – Thirty-one-year-old Daniel James, a taxi driver, was yesterday sentenced to three years imprisonment for grooming an underage female relative of his, for sex, following the completion of the trial conducted by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
James had denied the allegation that between December 12, last, and January 18, he communicated with a child under the age of 16, via WhatsApp, with intention to engage in sexual activity with her.
The Magistrate, before ruling on the matter, stated that Police Prosecutor Neville Jeffers had called a number of witnesses to testify and none of the witnesses’ evidence was discredited. Hence the Magistrate imposed the custodial sentence on him. James was represented by Attorney-at-Law Paul Fung-a- Fat.
According to information, James, when he first started to communicate with the juvenile, knew that she was underage, and he continued to communicate with her. It was also reported that during the month of January, last, James made arrangements to meet and have sex with the teen.
A relative of the teen saw the interaction between the teen and James, and reported the matter to the police station.
An investigation was later carried out and James was arrested and charged.
