Guyana: Private school closed after threat made online

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Feb 11, CMC – A private school has been forced to suspend classes until Wednesday as police investigate the latest threat to education institutions in the country.

Last week, the University of Guyana (UG) was forced to cancel classes for the week after bomb threats were made.

One person has since been detained for questioning and two weeks ago, the privately-owned School of the Nations faced a bomb threat as well as other acts of violence, forcing it In the latest incident.

The administration at the privately-owned, Mae’s School, Monday announced a suspension of classes until Wednesday to facilitate a police investigation into an online threat of violence against the school.

The decision followed a meeting about the threats that were posted on social media platforms over the last weekend.

In the threat, someone claiming to be “your former associate”, threatened to unveil a plan that would “blow the roof off” the school.

The school said out of an abundance of caution, together with the police, the school’s authorities had decided it is best to suspend classes for two days, to conduct a proper security sweep of the school.
