Orin Jules was sentenced to 17 years behind bars

(NEWS ROOM GUYANA) —  Thirty-year-old Orin Jules was on Monday sentenced to 17 years behind bars for killing his 23-year-old brother, Dexter, during an argument at their ‘D’ Field Sophia home on June 18, 2016.

Jules was sentenced by Justice Sandil Kissoon at the Demerara High Court on a charge of manslaughter. He was charged with the capital offence of murder but opted to plead guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter.

The state was represented by prosecutors Mandel Moore and Abigail Gibbs while Jules was represented by attorney-at-law Ravindra Mohabir.

The Judge, after considering Jules’ plea and the time he spent on remand, handed down the sentence.

It was claimed that on the day in question, the brothers were involved in an argument when Orin armed himself with a knife and stabbed Dexter multiple times to the chest.

Dexter was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Orin was apprehended by public-spirited persons and was handed over to the police after they found him hiding in a clump of bushes nearby.
