(GUYANA CHRONICLE) — A 55-year-old woman was, on Thursday, May 02, 2019, sentenced to four years jail and fined $9.1M for attempting to smuggle over seven pounds of cocaine through the Eugene F Correia International Airport, Ogle, East Coast Demerara.
Sandra Angela Profitt of West Ruimveldt appeared before Magistrate Rushell Liverpool in the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court and admitted to trafficking the drug.
Profitt admitted that on April 29, 2019, at the Eugene F Correia International Airport, Ogle, East Coast Demerara, she had 3.378 kilograms of cocaine in her possession for the purpose of trafficking.
In court, Profitt explained that her son was involved in a car accident and the owner of the vehicle demanded that he be bought a new car because of the damages.
The defendant explained that being a mother, she could not watch her son struggle, so she decided to traffic the drugs.
The matter was prosecuted by Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) prosecutor, Kunyo Sandiford.
According to information provided, Profitt, on the day in question, was sitting in the departure area waiting to board a LIAT flight destined for Barbados when she was intercepted by CANU ranks.
The suspected cocaine was in six packets, duct-taped to her upper thighs. Sandiford told the court that Profitt cooperated with CANU ranks during investigation and also identified the man who recruited her to traffic the cocaine.
CANU, on Wednesday, issued a wanted bulletin for Winston Carto called “Chief Mike”, Of Lot 193 Greenheart Street, South Ruimveldt Gardens, Georgetown, in relation to the same matter.
He is accused of supplying and recruiting Profitt to traffic the cocaine intercepted at the Eugene F. Correia International Airport Ogle.
