Guyana: Baby delivered on boat en route to Mabaruma

(NEWS ROOM GUYANA) — The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Medic successfully delivered a baby onboard a Transport and Harbours Department (T&HD) vessel on Friday.

The GDF, in a statement, disclosed that the vessel, MV Barima, was heading to Mabaruma, Region One, when at about 01:30hrs, the mother, Aloma Roberts, went into labour. The vessel was already several miles out in the Atlantic Ocean.

A healthy baby girl was delivered by Lance Corporal Nickel Charles, while a GDF patrol onboard the vessel radioed the nearest Coast Guard outpost for assistance, the GDF reported.

The GDF Coast Guard high-speed patrol craft subsequently intercepted the vessel and transported the newborn and mother to the Mabaruma Hospital.

The GDF reported that a team returned to the Mabaruma Hospital at around 14:30hrs on Friday to visit the mother and daughter.
