Gunmen and police shoot-out in Soufriere

Soufriere residents are now fearful after a series of gunshots rang out in their neighborhood last night.

It has been confirmed that the gunshots were part of a shootout between police and gunmen in the area.

A senior police officer from the Soufriere Police Station, who did not provide a full name, told St. Lucia News Online (SNO) that the station received a call at about 10:30 p.m. about a disturbance on the River Side Road and responded within minutes.

On arrival, the police met a group of men who were armed with guns. It was reported that the policemen attempted to execute their duties, but were barred from doing so. This allegedly resulted in an exchange of gunshots between the police and the men.

It is unclear whether anyone was arrested in connection with the shooting.

The police inspector said he cannot provide any more details relating to the incident.

A Soufriere resident said the shots woke her up.

“I thought I was dreaming,” she told SNO. “But some people confirmed. It transpired near the basketball court, Boulevard Street, Soufriere.”

The resident said “word is that the police fired the shots”.

  1. It's not about about policemen and thieves anymore because even the police are getting frustrated and are resorting tounderhanded activities in order to make ends meet. Mr. Greedy Joe alone is running the show and cares with nobody's problems. He's working for his Boss, Satan! People, take heed, guard your everything and remember that everybody wants to go up to heaven but nobody wants to die. Only in Jah we must put our trust.

  2. Soufriere is actually a hole so there is no where to run or hide except in the hole. The police just need to dig deeper to catch the perpetrators.

    • Just maybe when the Police arrived to investigate, they were met with people firing at them, hence they were unable to execute their duties.

  6. Wow, that virus is now spreading everywhere. Only one way to stop the spread of that virus, kill them. I know times are hard (everywhere) and with Gov't already trying to take 5% from workers to close the deficit, I do believe they need to hire more Police Officers. It's now blantantly obvious that criminals far out-number Police. With that, have frequent and active patrols (the Police Officer in charge at the station should be enforcing this) both during the day and at night. This violence is becoming ridiculous. These criminals have no regard for anyone, AT ALL. They commit whatever crime, but when Police show up, they try to escape by any means. If you all are so bad, why don't you stay and take credit for what you did. You criminals are nothing but a bunch of COWARDS.

  10. "If you are carrying a weapon, you should expect the worse." Who should expect the worst, policeman, criminal, citizen, child, tourist? This is not a good statement.

A better staement would be: If we cannot demand a better police force and Judicial System from those responsible then expect the worse. And the worst to be expected by policeman, criminal, citizen, child, tourist and Politician.

  13. "The resident said “word is that the police fired the shots”.

I think the "resident" should keep his version of events to himself if he didn't see or hear anything personally.

Maybe the coppers did shoot or they didn't. But if it's true that some people with unlicensed weapons were obstructing them, they should be taken out immediately. Too many innocents are getting caught in the crossfire of gang wars. If you're carrying a weapon, you should expect the worst.
