BASSE-TERRE, Guadeloupe, Mar 13, CMC – Leaders of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) will meet in this French Caribbean island on Thursday in a special session at which time Guadeloupe will be admitted as an associate member of the sub-regional grouping.

The St. Lucia-based OECS Commission said the accession will take place during the opening ceremony for the two-day special meeting.

The meeting will be addressed by St. Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister, Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, who is the chairman of the OECS, the newly elected Premier of the British Virgin Islands (BVI), Andrew Fahie, the OECS Director General, Dr. Didacus Jules and the President of the Regional Council of Guadeloupe, Ary Chalus.

Last week, more than 100 people attended a conference at the University of Antilles on the impending accession of Guadeloupe.

The organisers said that the forum was designed to better understand the OECS, the Regional Council of Guadeloupe’s cooperation strategy and the priority areas of collaboration between Guadeloupe and other OECS Member States.

It was organised by the Center of Geopolitical and International Analysis of Guadeloupe (CAGI) in partnership with the association Contacts Research Caribbean (CORECA).

The OECS groups the islands of Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Kitts-Nevis, Montserrat, Anguilla and the British Virgin islands.

The French island of Martinique became an Associate Member State of the OECS on February 4, 2015. The agreement for Associate Membership makes provision for closer cooperation between Martinique and OECS Member States in Education, Sports, Health, Air and Sea Transportation, Leisure and Boating Tourism, Arts and Culture.
