Gov’t expresses condolences on passing of Heraldine Rock

Monday, September 03, 2012 – In extending condolences on the death of Mrs Heraldine Rock commonly referred to as Ma Rock, the Government of Saint Lucia has described the former Parliamentarian as a true servant of the people and champion of women’s rights.

Born on July 28th ,1933, Ma Rock became the first female elected Parliamentarian after she fought for and won the Castries South East seat in 1974. She was also the first woman to serve as a Government Minister.

Acting Prime Minister Honourable Phillip J Pierre says in all her years of service Mrs Heraldine Rock always put the people first. “Ma Rock as she was affectionately known by friends and adversary alike had her political baptism during the heyday days of the 1970`s and was a champion of the people of south East Castries”.

From 1974 to 1980 Mrs Heraldine Rock served as Minister of Housing, Community Development, Local Government, and Social Affairs, Groups Needs, Cooperatives, the Provident Fund and Water. She was also a member of the Castries Town Board from 1964 to 1974.

Acting Prime Minister Pierre says Mrs Rock has made an indelible contribution to the development of Saint Lucia. “Castries South East in particular and the people of Saint Lucia in general have lost a great daughter of the soil, a trail blazer who found no boundaries in being of service”.

Mrs Heraldine Rock enjoyed farming as a past time and was a regular caller to several talk shows in her last days. At the time of her death she was 79 years old.
