(PRESS RELEASE VIA SNO) – The Soufriere/Fond St Jacques Constituency Group of the Saint Lucia Labour Party expresses serious concern regarding the judgment of the Allen Chastanet led administration and questions its commitment to the development of the people of Soufriere/Fond St Jacques.

The Group argues that only an uncaring government would close the only Healthcare facility in the town of Soufriere with no end in sight. The Group says that it is alarmed that the Soufriere Hospital, which plays the critical lifesaving role of responding to medical emergencies in the constituency of Soufriere/Fond St Jacques, remains close, for more than six months, after sustaining very minimal damage following two mysterious fires.

The Group says it is equally disturbed that Hon. Herod Stanislaus and Prime Minister Allen Chastanet have suspended works on the Soufriere square, for two years now, for no valid reason. It is indeed sad, says the Group, that the Soufriere square: a product of constituency consultation, which was fully funded by the Taiwanese Government and was eighty percent complete at the time of the suspension of works, was abandoned. This irresponsible action, it argues, has led to the deterioration of the Soufriere square, which is now an eyesore and hazard in the heart of the town of Soufriere; a major component of the tourism infrastructure of Saint Lucia.

Further, it says the youth of the constituency are enraged by the government’s decision to place an artificial surface on the playing area of the Soufriere Mini Stadium, which according to the youth of the constituency “will prevent the use of the grounds for the game of cricket.” It must be noted that it is not possible to build a cricket pitch on synthetic surfaces.

The Constituency Group is calling upon the Parliamentary Representative for Soufriere/Fond St Jacques to explain why his government is hell-bent on reversing the gains that were made under the former SLP government while he sits idly by and does nothing to protect and advance the interests of the constituents of Soufriere/Fond St Jacques.

Meanwhile the Group says it is more than ready to stall all efforts by this government to impose any limitations to the use of the grounds at the mini stadium and more specifically to exclude the playing of cricket.

The Soufriere Constituency Group invites the public to a public meeting on Wednesday 6 June where these and other matters of national interest will be discussed.

My primary concern is that the Soufriere hospital should be re opened ASAP. I am very concerned that our District Rep remains somewhat tight lipped regarding this issue whilst people die. In this case I care not about red nor yellow. There are certain medical conditions where time is of paramount importance and patient stabilization is key such as strokes, cardiac or diabetic coma and 10 minutes there about to Etangs have proven to be eternally detrimental to quite a few unfortunate persons. I think we should all take a minute rather than bickering over SLP/UWP or Dalson/Herrod and ask ourselves, WHAT IF????? WHO'S NEXT?????

  3. Speak for Yourself....not for the rest of us!

As a born and bred resident of Soufriere, I can safely say that Mr. Stanislas has done a LOT more to better our lives in TWO years than the former rep ever managed in FIVE years under the SLP government. Areas which were being ignored and abandoned have received a face lift and he has shown how much he wants to assist in moving the youth forward. Mr. Stanislas has supported almost every single venture which has been put forward by the young people of Soufriere, yet the ill-informed or most likely malicious PR wing of the SLP can do nothing more than sit at a computer and type garbage, which I can bet my bottom dollar, does not even truly represent the views of the majority of us Soufrierians.

  4. He care ? His puppet Stanislaus care ? Soufrierens don't remember when the extruded product of the UWP was running what they had to deal with ? As usual nobody remembers that Chastanet initiated the firing of Tourist guides and custodians from Soufriere he never give a dam about poor people so what make you think that has change. The election not close yet so you are not going to see any movement pal. Soufrierens can have what they desire; all the constituency group has to do is step over Stanislaus have a luncheon invite all the general managers of all the big hotels that are perched on the hills and explain their plight and ask for them to adopt a project in their name and complete it. It's within their VESTED INTEREST AS STAKE HOLDERS to have a working hospital right below them, an enhance square and water front to delight their guess and residents. Where is the tourist enhancement fund for Soufriere which is plays a pivotal part of the tourism product for St Lucia ? There is none and nobody is demanding one. Just pure jackasses in office doing nothing on the behalf of the people.

      • I was in Soufriere in December 2016. I observed that the Square was all boarded up and some form of construction was taking place. I am shocked to read that activity is still ongoing. I hope this is a case of false news.
Soufriere has tremendous economic potential but the politicians have never understood the value. A large number of tourists go THROUGH Soufriere each day. Notice, I used the word THROUGH.

  5. More crap from SLP. A simple and fair question like "When will the Soufriere hospital be repaired?" they can't ask. What stupid politics.
