Government working to reduce unemployment

GIS – Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Kenny D. Anthony said last week that the Government of Saint Lucia will continue to approach the problem of unemployment vigorously.

Dr. Anthony highlighted government’s achievements in the area of employment, and said that he expects the unemployment rate to decline as new investments are made in the island in the months ahead.

“The Constituency Development Program (CDP) is currently implementing projects in all seventeen constituencies,” he said. “Over 3,000 jobs are created through CDP each financial year.

“A total of 520 young people have already gained employment under the Cruise Ship Employment Program. In January this year 92 more young people secured jobs, and just last week, Carnival Cruise Lines appointed another 17. This is possible because we are making loans available for our young people to undergo training.

“In addition, over 5,400 people have been employed during the life of the NICE program, with 162 currently employed in the Farm Labor Support Program. Another 241 are currently serving as principals, IT assistants and in other posts under the Ministry of Education, while there were 1,155 jobs created under NICE to provide administrative support to various agencies such as the Registry.”

The Prime Minister continued: “There are 82 playing field maintenance workers and 325 caregivers with the Home Help for the Elderly Program, and the number [of caregivers] will soon increase by an additional 200.

“Between January to March, 200 were employed under the Youth Entrepreneurship Program funded by the SLHTA; and STEP provides jobs to approximately 2, 000 people each cycle.”

Dr. Anthony revealed that plans for the construction of a new hotel at Smugglers Cove in Cap Estate is expected to create about 1200 new jobs during the construction phase. He further spoke of government’s initiatives in the areas of infrastructure and social assistance.

“Be it roads, water, lights, facilities, we will ensure that every sector and every community is taken care of. You have seen evidence of this: for the first time in the history of Saint Lucia, there is a special program for the disabled.”

“The families of disabled children now receive a $200 monthly stipend. In Micoud, a new school was constructed, a new access centre is under construction, and a new water tank will be installed in Desruisseaux, in Micoud south.”

Dr. Anthony provided assurance that his administration will leave no one behind as it seeks to develop the country.

“We will cater to the needs of all because this is a Government for all the people,” he said.

  2. Kenny your goose is cooked.....Remember your side kick Denzil Douglas he tried one more time to buy the people of St.Kitts vote but they were adamant their minds were made up and yes he was tricked at the end and left with his jaw wide open. St.Lucia is much bigger than St.Kitts. Remember that you can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time. You can push your hands deep into your bag of tricks but this time you will come up EMPTY.

  4. Small businesses can play a major support in decrease unemployment.
Why not focus on allowing small businesses to grew which will create jobs, allow them access to loans that will allow the people to be employed.small businesses do play a major roll in creating employment.

  5. Kenny has created the perfect welfare state. He is turning all of us into helpless beggars. It's known by another name, socialism.

  6. Why do you need 241 people to work in the Ministry of Education and a further 1 155 for administrative support at Government Departments? If those people are really needed why not employ them full time?

We know that all this is either a ploy to employ party faithful or to purposely boost employment figures. As we all know and you have said time and time again that the Public Service is too large and needs to be streamlined. How could these two acute differences be achieved? Where are the new sectors which would provide fresh employment?

It seems plain that you Mr PM has used "an oppressive and anti-poor tax" to start a huge state funded welfare program. Who are those benefitting from this welfare program?

A country which runs on aid and assistance from other countries cannot itself become a welfare state. This is why we have seen a sharp decline in the economy from the time this government has assumed power. Without the creation of new jobs in new sectors government has divided the existing jobs into many pieces. Therefore, we are facing a crisis with the law of diminishing returns. The government is effectively over taxing us to create a welfare state. Why would people be required to pay PAYE while still paying VAT and all other taxes? Case of an educated man using uneducated people to the detriment of themselves and the educated.

PLEASE Free up lucelec's grip on the illegal monopolisation of the electricity market in this country and you will see a large opportunity for jobs in the solar electric/ renewable energy market. This government protecting lucelec has gone too far

  16. Albeit a bit late, one must concede a ''well done, keep it up'' when its due. I am must say that the government is making a noticeable effort to generate employent, particularly in previously unexploited areas. Finally our leaders realise that the decline in agriculture and our excess labour are not mutually exclusive and can both can be adressed harmonically.

  18. in terms of the handicapped, id give him a half clap, but atlas, are we seeing the VAT money finally in play??? $200 can't do a thing for a family raising a disabled one, but ill acknowledge it as a start.

and as i said b4 bouden robba, short term jobs aren't really beneficial so you can't honestly rely on these numbers, esp when these jobs' durations are less than 6 months.

imo, facilities such as physical and speech therapy, more special education institutions and free transportation to access such amenities, and more penalties for regular ppl parking in handicapped spots would be a better place to start. but thats ok we have tim-oh, elections are right around the corner, i take that back. don't be fooled my people!

  23. Family of disabled receives a stipend... Exactly how does this work? The hoops one must jump to get that $200. Also if a parent of the disabled is employed they are automatically disqualified. They even visit your house .... Choops tan
