Prime Minister of Saint Lucia Dr. Kenny D. Anthony has warmly welcomed, on behalf of the government and people of Saint Lucia, the election of the new Pope, Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio as his holiness Pope Francis.
According to Prime Minister Anthony, “Pope Francis has emerged as a man of genuine care for the downtrodden, a man of humility, and a man with a passion for justice. We thank his predecessor, His Holiness Benedict the Sixteenth, Pope Emeritus, for his work, charity and courage.
“As former bishop of Buenos Aires in Argentina, through his selected Archdiocesan motto of “lowly and yet chosen,” Francis 1 reminded us of the remarkable humanity in each and every human being, regardless of their wealth or disposition. Now, as Bishop of Rome, he calls his pastoral flock to follow “with mercy and choosing” in their spiritual mission.
“Millions around the world, including the overwhelming number of Catholics in Saint Lucia, look to this new time in the church for renewed faith, joy and hope. In particular, Saint Lucia welcomes and celebrates the Holy Father as the first Supreme Pontiff to hail from the ‘New World’, the Americas.
“Today’s world faces many challenges and is in desire for leadership and credibility. Yet, His Holiness, even in merely choosing his new name, has already shown that he is eager to be an instrument of peace, justice and to lead the faithful in praising God with humility, in brotherhood, and through all His creation.
“My wife, Professor Rose Marie B. Antoine, and I join in the praying for his Holiness, that he may be granted health and strength to be the spiritual vicar for so many.
“Saint Lucia reaffirms its cordial relations with the Holy See and also extends its congratulations to the Archdiocese of Castries and the Antillean Episcopal Conference on this momentous and historic occasion.”
