Government to meet cost for missing fisherman found by Panamanian authorities

Health Minister Alvina Reynolds, who is currently in Panama on state business, began her trip by visiting Lazarus Alfred, the Saint Lucian fisherman, who had been missing for eight weeks.

Reports suggest that Lazarus, who was adrift, was found by Panamanian authorities off the coast of Panama a few weeks ago. Since then, the government of Saint Lucia has been working closely with the authorities in Panama to ensure Lazarus’ safe return home.

The health minister, who is accompanied by the principal nursing officer, has expressed Lazarus’ joy to meet with Saint Lucian representatives. Despite his ordeal, he appears to be in high spirits and is patiently awaiting his journey home.

Lazarus reported that the authorities in Panama have been kind to him and have made his stay as comfortable as possible, under the circumstances.

The Ministry of External Affairs and the Office of the Prime Minister continue to work assiduously to ensure Lazarus’ safe return home.

However, issues such as his health condition as well as the availability of the necessary travel documents had to be considered and have been sorted. Therefore, it is expected that Lazarus will return home sometime this week.

The government of Saint Lucia will be meeting the cost of his ticket from Panama to Saint Lucia.
