The initiative offers citizens a waiver on import taxes for barrels containing only personal items, but there is a limit on the number of barrels allotted per household.
Press Secretary to the Prime Minister, Jadia Jn Pierre Emmanuel, says the order for the award of the concession on Christmas barrels will be taken before Parliament shortly in keeping with the introduction of the Value Added Tax Act.
“It is no longer a situation where Cabinet makes the decision and public but rather it has to go to the House of Assembly where both the Opposition and government MP’s will debate the order, but we aren’t expecting there to be any voices of objection to the concession so it is just a matter of time before the prime minister takes the order to the Parliament. And he has promised that this will be one of the priority items on the agenda the next time the House of Assembly meets and so Saint Lucians can look forward to an announcement being made very soon indicating the concession will be given, the time period etc.”
The concessions on the importation of barrels during the Christmas season is generally intended to give citizens some relief during the traditional festive season.
