(SKY NEWS) – A police officer was left with a fractured wrist and other injuries after he was run over trying to stop a 12-year-old girl who had stolen her mother’s car.
Police were called after the girl started driving in loops around a trailer park near Meridian in Lauderdale County, Mississippi, on Wednesday night.
County Sheriff Billy Sollie said deputies placed spike strips on several sections of the road to try to flatten the tyres.
As Sergeant Kris Cokel tried to stop the girl he was hit.
The officer was taken to hospital and treated for a fractured wrist and other injuries, according to the sheriff.
As Sgt Cokel was hit, a deputy fired gunshots to try to stop the vehicle.
The sheriff said the deputy was not shooting at the girl.
The girl was taken to a juvenile facility and the state’s Bureau of Investigation is handling the case.
