Five Saint Lucians have been named to the Windward Islands Under-15 cricket team following the 2015 WINLOTT tournament that ended this week in Saint Lucia.
The tournament saw Saint Lucia repeating as champions, winning four of their six games, with one loss and one abandonment. The tournament was played in Saint Lucia.
Key to the home team’s victory was its batting, led by their opening batsmen, captain and wicketkeeper Kimani Melius and allrounder Dhan-Raj ‘Chaz’ Cepal. Both are on the Windwards team.
Kimani made a tournament-high 233 runs from six innings, including the second-highest individual score in an innings, 110. He has been named Windwards captain.
Chaz, who is also a useful spinner, ended the competition with 215 runs from five innings, including a high score of 69.
Kimani and Chaz had two opening stands of 119, against Dominica and St Vincent and the Grenadines, two of the top three partnerships in the WINLOTT competition.
They laid the foundation as well for the highest team total, 278 against the hapless Vincentians.
Also contributing in the runs column were allrounder Lee Solomon, who also opened the bowling for Saint Lucia, and Simeon Gerson.
Simeon, like Kimani, is returning to the Windward Islands team. Better known for his spin bowling, he was the second leading wicket-taker in the 2014 West Indies tournament.
Another young man who will be counted on to contribute with the ball is Rene Montoute, who also bats in the middle order.
Dominica was second in this year’s WINLOTT tourney. Their captain, Tahj Tavernier, is vice-captain of the Windwards team. He made 220 runs to slot it between Kimani and Chaz.
Tahj, who bats one down, may be preferred to Kimani as wicketkeeper. The Dominican ended the competition with eight dismissals, the most of anyone behind the stumps.
He will be joined in the Windwards team by Ethan Doctrove, returning allrounder Micah Joseph and second-leading WINLOTT wicket-taker Jahseon Alexander.
Jahseon also proved himself a useful allrounder, playing a part in two of the top five partnerships, 124 against Grenada and 79 against Saint Lucia.
From Grenada, the 14-member squad includes the top wicket-taker, Lennoy Charles (17 scalps), Cazari Charles (12), Razim Elahie and batsman Shakim Edwards.
The lone player from bottom-placed St Vincent and the Grenadines is Tijourn Pope, who was his team’s top batsman and bowler.
The WINLOTT tournament included 270 boundaries and 14 maximum hits. Micah Joseph had two of the six five-wicket hauls. Jahseon Alexander had the best bowling figures in an innings.
Last year, the Windward Islands placed fourth in the West Indies Under-15, winning three of their five matches. The West Indies tournament will be played sometime in July.
