ferti(WHIMN) — DNA results have confirmed a Dutch fertility doctor secretly used his own sperm to inseminate patients without their consent and father 49 children.
After a drawn-out court battle, a judge finally agreed to allow Jan Karbaat’s patients and their children access to his DNA, which proved the Rotterdam IVF clinician was illegally impregnating the women he saw, according to local reports.
Karbaat swapped chosen donor sperm with his own and when some of his patients became suspicious, they brought a legal case against him shortly before he died at 89.
The deceased doctor’s family tried to stop the release of his DNA, which Dutch media says was taken from items such as a toothbrush locked in a safe.
Most of so-called “Karbaatkinderen” are now in their 30s. One known as Joey said finding out Karbaat was his father meant he could find closure.
“After a search of 11 years, I can continue my life. I am glad that I finally have clarity,” he told Dutch media, NOS.
Karbaat’s clinic shut down in 2009.
The BBC reported its closure was due to accusations that Karbaat fabricated data and exceeded the legal number of six children per sperm donor.
