Female boxer makes competitive debut
Melanda made her competitive debut in an overseas match.
Melanda St. Clair, Ron Bastien and Arthur Langelier with boxing association officials left for an Invitational Boxing Card in Guyana last weekend.

PRESS RELEASE – A contingent of three boxers and two officials returned home from participating in a Nuff Cuff Injection Boxing Card in Guyana.

The event, organised by the Guyana Boxing Association, took place in Buxton, Guyana. However, many fights did not happen on that weekend because of heavy rain.

The only St. Lucian boxer who was able to fight on the night was female middleweight Merlanda St. Claire, who made her debut against Guyanese opponent Theresa London.

The Guyana match was Melanda’s competitive debut in a ring.

Despite putting on a good display of boxing technique and skill, St. Claire went down to her Guyanese opponent on points. She impressed everyone who saw her on the night, with many baffled that this was her first competitive bout in the ring, as she showed good technique and skill.

The two other St. Lucian boxers on the card Welterweight Ron Bastien and Middleweight Arthur Langelier did not get to fight. Their bouts had to be put off as the rain affected the card. However, the following day at a local gym they both put on a good exhibition bouts against Guyanese boxers.

The local boxers are set to participate in a Boxing Invitational Card in Martinique on June 14. Other future matches are the Creole Games in Guadeloupe from July 9 to12, the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland from July 27 to August 3 and the CAC Games Qualifiers from August 8 to16 in Bogota, Columbia.

St. Lucia is also set to host the OECS Boxing Championships later this year.
