The Saint Lucia National Cricket Association hosted the first of several trial matches for their National Senior cricketers over the weekend at the Mindoo Phillip Park.
This is in preparation for the 2014 Windwards Senior Cricket Tournament scheduled to take place in Saint Lucia from 30 October.
The teams were captained by Windward Islands batsman Keddy Lesporis and West Indies limited-overs opener Johnson Charles. The two are teammates for Saint Lucia Zouks in the Caribbean Premier League.
Bowlers – and spinners in particular – were very much on top over the course of the two-day match, and batsmen found the going heavy, with a thick outfield leaving little value for good shots.
Batting first, Charles’ XI was dismissed for 203 in 65.3 overs. Charles himself made 34 and Stephen Naitrum 33, whilst Kurt Edward added 29, Alex Antoine 27, Mervin Wells 20 and Walter Emmanuel 18.
Bowling for Lesporis’ XI, Larry Edward was outstanding; the 19-year-old former West Indies Under-19 player, fresh off a summer sojourn in england, took 4 for 55 in 21 overs.
Dalton Polius copped 3 for 45 in 15 overs and Murlan Sammy 2 for 22 in 8 overs.
In reply, Lesporis’ XI was dismissed for just 119 in 51 overs; Craig Emmanuel led the way with 31.
Bowling for Charles’ XI, Alex Antoine snagged 5 for 21 in 10 overs, Loic Prospere 2 for 18 in 15 overs and Vince Smith 2 for 26 in 11 overs.
Batting a second time, Charles’ XI reached 77 for 9 in 34.2 overs with Alex Antoine contributing 31.
For Lesporis’ XI the leading wicket takers were, Marlon O’ Brian with 3 for 21 in 7 overs and Larry Edward 2 for 5 in 8 overs, the Castries Comprehensive alum taking his match tally to 7 for 60.
