Earthquake rocks South America, Trinidad and eastern Caribbean

A strong earthquake with a magnitude 6.4 occurred Friday near Venezuela and Trinidad and Tobago, and was also felt in St. Lucia and neighbouring islands.

The US Geological Survey stated that the location of the earthquake, which occurred sometime between 10:10 p.m. and 10: 15 p.m., was located 19 miles (30 km) north north east of Guiria, Venezuela and 54 miles (87 km) west north west of Port-of-Spain, Trinidad.

Some parts of Trinidad have been plunged into darkness as a result of the earthquake.

Residents throughout St. Lucia reported feeling the earthquake which lasted between three and six seconds.

It was also felt in Grenada, Dominica, St. Vincent, Guyana, Martinique and Guadeloupe.

There have been no immediate reports of damage or injury. No tsunami warning has been issued.
