The University of the West Indies (UWI) Seismic Research Centre in Trinidad an Tobago has confirmed that an earthquake was felt in Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Martinique on Thursday morning.

Most persons in Saint Lucia reported feeling the quake at about 10:18 a.m. The Centre said the quake occurred at 10:16 a.m.

Reports of the quake are coming from the north and south of Saint Lucia.

No immediate reports of damages were received.

The UWI Seismic Research Centre said based on preliminary reports the magnitude of the earthquake is 4.7. This may change after further assessments.

The Centre further reported that the earthquake was located 14.01 north and 60.40 west with a depth of 21 kilometres.

The earthquake occurred 64km east of Castries, Saint Lucia; 100km southeast of Fort-de-France, Martinique; and 132 km northeast of Kingstown, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, the Centre stated.

THE PROBLEM WITH EARTHQUAKES IS THAT SCIENTISTS ARE NOT ABLE AS YET TO DEVELOP AN EARLY WARNING SYSTEM TO PREDICT THE APPROXIMATE TIME, DATE,LOCATION AND MAGNITUDE OF EACH EARTHQUAKE.
SINCE ST.LUCIA AND THE OECS EXPERIENCE FREQUENT EARTHQUAKES THEN WE MUST HAVE A MANDATORY BUILDING CODE WHICH WILL ADDRESS THE DESIGN,LOCATION AND CONSTRUCTION OF PRIVATE AND PUBLIC BUILDINGS.
DOES ANY AGENCY IN ST. LUCIA TEST THE STEEL REBARS IMPORTED INTO THIS ISLAND AND USED FOR CONSTRUCTION TO DETERMINE IF THEY HAVE THE RIGHT STRENGTH?

  11. PEOPLE JUST CONTINUING PRAYING EVERYDAY BECAUSE WITH ALL THOSE EARTHQUAKES SO OFTEN YOUR'LL COULD NEVER KNOW WHEN WE WILL GET A TSUNAMI AND IF WE HAVE TO CONTINUE DOING BAD GOD WILL JUST SMITE US BY GIVING US A TSUNAMI, BUT PEOPLE REMEMBER IF YOU EVER SEE THE SEA GOING BACK DON'T GO AND WATCH, RUN, RUN AND RUN FOR THE CLOSEST HILL YOU CAN FIND.

    • Is that the Christian god, the Muslim god, the Hindu god, the god of thunder, or one of the other multitude of gods from the beginning of time?

  13. Hope this was not the messenger for the inevitable big one that the scientist and authorities want to blight us with, telling us that we are long overdue for a big one.

    • Just off St. lucia. Sounds like volcanic activity on its way. A few weeks ago it was Chile. Most people forget that we live on a violent planet that is constantly evolving. I have experienced a 5.7 in the California desert in 1996

    • My contribution

It's not just the magnitude. Its the magnitude along with the depth. When it is deep damage can be unlikely. The shallow ones are more dangerous.
