Senator Dr. James Fletcher, Saint Lucia’s minister for public service, sustainable development, energy, science and technology, will be one of the specially invited speakers at the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction being convened in Geneva, Switzerland from May 19-23 by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR).
Dr. Fletcher will speak on the subject “Strengthening Partnerships Towards Disaster Risk Reduction for Small Island Developing States”.
The Global Platform seeks, inter alia, to establish (i) a stronger and more sustainable global movement for disaster risk reduction and resilience; (ii) a dynamic and trend-setting forum for decision-makers;(iii) a forum to discuss progress and consult over a post-2015 framework for disaster risk reduction; and (iv) directions and new alliances for the development and use of new tools and methodologies aimed at understanding and applying the economics and investment in disaster risk reduction.
This international forum is of particular significance to islands like Saint Lucia that have already been warned to anticipate more severe and frequent storms and hurricanes as a result of climate change, and are also expected to be the victims of the slow-onset impacts of global warming, such as sea-level rise, salinization, and ocean acidification.
