(THE SUN) – A 6-year-old boy has had an operation to remove a pen tip from his penis.

The patient, from India, went to the hospital after suffering several urinary tract infections.

He was also having difficulty urinating and would “dribble” urine after he went to the toilet.

Tests ruled out infection and X-rays showed there was nothing blocking his kidneys or bladder, according to the British Medical Journal case report.

Doctors at King George’s Medical University in India referred him for further scans, which revealed his urethra was dilated and blocked.

Using a thin wire with a camera attached to it they looked into his urethra – the tube that carries urine out of the body from the bladder – and discovered “glistening blue plastic material.”

Medics used surgical forceps to remove the foreign body out through his urethra, which turned out to be a 1.5-cm (0.5-inch) pen tip.

But it’s not known how the pen tip ended up where it did.

“How a foreign body landed up in the posterior urethra of a six-year-old child is an anomaly that has perplexed the authors with failure to reach a conclusive answer,” Dr. Samarth Agarwal wrote in the report.

“Multitude of theories exist on self-insertion of foreign body in urethra ranging from psychiatric illness, intoxication, sexual gratification and attempts to relieve itching by inserting objects in the urethra.

“In all possibilities, the authors opine [believe] that the child could have accidentally inserted the foreign body while playing.

“Another hypothesis is that the child may have inserted a pen (a complete one) into the urethra trying to relieve his obstructed voiding/dysuria, the pen cap disconnected from the pen and remained in the urethra as a foreign body.”

Foreign objects in the urethra is not an uncommon occurrence but is mainly something that’s reported in adults.

Doctors believe this is the first case of its kind of a foreign body being found in a young child’s urethra.

In most cases of adult foreign body removals, the object taken out is used for sexual gratification.

Earlier this month we reported on how doctors had to invent a new tool to remove a 23-inch sex toy from a man’s rectum after it got stuck for 24 hours.

Another man, in a separate case, perforated his bowel after he “lost control” of a 30-inch bendy sex toy after a boozy night.
