Castries, St. Lucia: Telecommunications company Digicel, partnered with the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG) and embarked on a project that will enhance the lives of many adult St Lucians, with the introduction of a adult literacy programme call “Universal Lecture.”
Digicel realizes that encouraging adults to engage in continuous learning throughout their life is a very important part of ones mental development. Through adult learning and raising literacy skills persons with a low level of education can improve their economic and social wellbeing. Unfortunately, at present St Lucia has many persons in society who are illiterate. Many adult males and females cannot perform the basic function of reading and writing.
Digicel knowing of this dilemma, immediately gave assistance to the Literacy “Universal Lecture” Project which gives classes to over 50 students on the fundamentals of reading and writing.
With guidance from the Adult literacy Department of the Ministry of Education, the “Universal Lecture” programme seeks to empower adults by teaching them to read, write and gain independence. The official start of the classes began in August and to date the attendees of the programme have shown tremendous progress and enthusiasm at the classes and their development.
Marketing Manager for Digicel, Kerchelle Jn Charles commented, “Digicel is aware that literacy skills help people to make the most of opportunities in life, and help in solving day to day problems. Giving assistance to an organization like UCKG does not only help the adults in the class but by extension, St Lucia”.
Seeing the necessity of this programme, Digicel will continue to give assistance in this area as its importance is paramount for the betterment of this country.
