The annual regional reading competition came alive at the Sandals Grande Hotel on October 31, with Digicel being a proud sponsor.
Participants in the event were from several neighbouring islands and ranged within the ages of eight to nine. The emerging winner was Dean Bedeau of the spice isle of Grenada.
Digicel St. Lucia was happy to be a part of this venture which fosters youth development and created an avenue for young children to be extraordinary with their reading talents. The Courts OECS Schools Reading Competition, now in its fifth year, required participants to deliver two reading speeches/ narratives, which was the same for each participant; and news which related to an actual event from various regional television stations.
“Digicel was pleased to support the competition once again as it endeavours to develop the reading capabilities of Caribbean youth,” said Marketing Manager Kerchelle Jn. Charles.
“Placing emphasis on the improvement of reading skills that ultimately lead students to better self-expression is important, and Digicel will continue to play its part in raising awareness on improving this vital skill within children.”
After the strong performances by each participant, a new reading champion was crowned in Dean Bedeau. He received a lightweight Samsung Galaxy 7.0 tab among several other prizes from Digicel St. Lucia.
The sixth annual regional reading competition will be held in Grenada in the birth island of the new winner.
Digicel joins St. Lucia and the remaining Caribbean in wishing Dean all the best in his future endeavours.
