Digicel, The Bigger Better Network gave full support to the Inter-Special Needs School Sports day, which enabled special needs schools from around the island to converge on the George Odlum Stadium to participate and have fun in both track events and fun sports.
Last Wednesday, March 20, 2013, various special needs schools from St. Lucia executed a successful sports day for their kids. The Special Education Center in Vieux Fort, Lady Gordon Opportunity Center, Dunnattor School, SLBWA Unit, Education Unit & Dennery Centre and Soufriere Special Education Rehabilitation Centre, all had their under-16 sports representative compete in the sixth staging of the Inter-Special Needs School Sports.
This day-long sports endeavor saw their best athletes and cheerleaders represent their schools with pride. A healthy competitive nature could have been felt at the sports meet as screams of encouragement echoed throughout the stadium by the kids in support of their schools. Creative placards were a highlight at the event as the kids expressed their gratitude for the support of the sports day with clever slogans.
Miss Angelina Augustin, education officer for the Special Education Unit said: “We have gone to great lengths to ensure that students with disabilities are not discriminated against but rather all our athletic students are given equal opportunities. We are grateful for Digicel’s continued support to children with special needs and disability through their Caring Connection Community project.”
Digicel’s Marketing Manager Kerchelle Jn Charles said: “Digicel have realized that kids with special needs, need to have equal access to sporting activities. Using sports as a medium to enhance motor skills, social and communicating abilities, as well as improving their overall health and well-being is a great win special needs authorities and the Digicel team.”
Digicel looks forward to next year’s staging of the sports event as this year was a great success.
