Digicel provides 15,000 in scholarships in time for back to school

CASTRIES, ST. LUCIA – August 30, 2012 – As we approach a new school year, Digicel St Lucia provided scholarship funding too fourteen students who will be entering secondary education at many of the schools around the island.

As a committed and proactive corporate citizen, Digicel continues to show its support for education and development of youth. Digicel presented less fortunate students with a financial scholarship for the new academic year 2012 to 2013. This programme served as a vehicle to reach out to youth and their families who needed monetary support to assist with acquiring books, uniforms and other educational essentials.

Under the Digicel Scholarship Programme the students were nominated by Digicel team members who also accompanied their child and parent to help shop and acquire all their necessities needed for the new school year. This gesture served as a relief for the parents who needed that deserving break.

Digicel’s endorsee, outstanding West Indies cricketer and Captain of the West Indies team Darren Sammy took a day out of his busy schedule to meet and inspire the kids who received the scholarships. Always ready and willing to assist the youth, Darren was very excited about the venture and also gave the kids a wonderful treat by signing their Digicel/Darren exercise books as a memento from that special day.

Digicel’s Country Manager Holly Hughes McNamara commented, “Digicel is committed to supporting this important educational sponsorship, which gives students a fair opportunity to be educated. This significant contribution is in keeping with our concerted efforts to assist the youth as we recognize their value to the future development of St. Lucia.”

Digicel welcomes every opportunity to assist our youth in their journey to become successful citizens of St. Lucia.
