DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know there are four historic military areas in St.  Lucia?

They are the Morne, La Toc, Vigie and Pigeon Island and among the four Pigeon Island is the only one preserved in its entirety.

The Morne, unfortunately was subdivided during the period 1965-1970 and sold in lots to private individuals.

Only a small part of the most historic section surrounding old Forte Charlotte has been spared.  La Toc and Vigie have been totally lost to private individuals.

Did you know the military barracks at Vigie were built about 1891 and abandoned in 1905?

They were used again in 1915-1918 and 1942-1945 for military purposes during the two World Wars.  They are now used as apartments, known as “Casa St. Lucia”.

  1. Thanks for the information Anselma - always interesting. I love those barracks and monuments. I always think the people who live in the Vigie barracks are so lucky.
