Dennery are the Blackheart Champions of Champions Football Festival champions, winning in Saturday evening’s final at the Soufriere Stadium.
The tournament included eight teams, former Blackheart Champions Gros Islet, Mabouya Valley, Dennery, Micoud, Anse La Raye, reigning champions Canaries and the 2014 and 2015 Saint Lucia Football Association (SLFA) Heineken Fantasy Football champions, Vieux Fort North and Soufriere.
In the opening round, Micoud beat Vieux Fort North 1-0; Dennery and Gros Islet played to a 1-1 draw, Dennery won on penalties in sudden death; Canaries similarly beat neighbours Anse La Raye 5-3 on penalties; and Mabouya Valley beat Soufriere 2-1.
In the semifinals, Dennery beat Canaries 1-0 and Mabouya Valley and Micoud drew 1-1, Micoud winning 5-3 on penalties.
And in the grand finale, Dennery beat Micoud 1-0 to win the east coast derby, the Champion of Champions trophy and $2000. Micoud, for their troubles, walked away with a cool $1000.
The 2015 Blackheart / SLFA Knockout Football tournament set to kick off on Saturday 19 September at the Beausejour Stadium. The tournament this year will be played at Beausejour, Phillip Marcellin Grounds in Vieux Fort and the Soufriere Stadium.
A number of warmup and promotional events as well as playoff matches will be held ahead of the kickoff. Four teams will be involved in the playoffs this year: Anse La Raye, Mon Repos and Choiseul, who did not qualify for the tournament last year, and Desruisseaux, last year’s worst loser in the opening round.
The two-legged playoffs get underway on 12 August from 6pm at the Marcellin Grounds – Anse La Raye will play Choiseul, Mon Repos will face Desruisseaux.
