(GIS) – The CDF has rebranded Saint Lucia’s end of year activities. The series of events is now aptly titled the “December Festivals.”
Organized by the Cultural Development Foundation (CDF), the theme for this year’s December Festivals is “Celebrating a Community Christmas—The Light That We Share!”
The December Festivals was launched on Wednesday, Nov. 29, at the CDF conference room at Barnard’s Hill.
Tyrone Harris, CDF Senior Events Officer, unveiled the December 2017 calendar of activities.
“We used to call this activity the Festival of Lights. It has been rebranded, and is now called the December Festivals,” he said. “There are three components to the December Festivals: the lantern competition, the Festival of Carols, and the mega event which is the Festival of Lights ceremony.”
The lantern competition was held on Dec. 2 at the National Cultural Centre, and the Festival of Carols, at the Holy Family RC Church in Jacmel, on Dec. 3.
The core attraction of the December Festivals, the Festival of Lights, will be held on Dec. 12, in collaboration with the Castries Constituency Council (CCC).
“The Festival of Lights starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Derek Walcott Square,” Mr Harris continued. “There are a number of components within the Festival of Lights ceremony. It starts with a street parade or procession from the Castries Constituency Council, which features the lantern participants, traditional music, drums, fire eaters, and a masquerade. The Festival of Lights will also feature the ceremonial turning on of the lights with a display funded through the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan). It will culminate with a themed production featuring Saint Lucian entertainers, and an elaborate fireworks display.”
Saint Lucians from all over the island as well as visitors, are being invited to join in on this national celebration which ushers in the Christmas season.
