SNO

 Share This On:

The death from the Christmas Eve flooding across the island now stands at five.

Two bodies were reportedly discovered in Bexon; the body of a young man was found in Grace; a body was retrieved in Micoud; and a police officer was killed last night.

BEXON: A body was discovered in Crownlands (just before Marc). It has so far been identified as a male known as ‘Taliban’. No further details on the second body.

POLICE OFFICER:  Calvin Louis was reportedly crushed by a wall while trying to help persons in an area in Vieux-Fort city. Louis is from Piaye, Laborie and was working as a Special Services Unit (SSU) officer in Vieux-Fort at the time of his death.

MICOUD:  There are reports that two bodies were discovered but our news team can only confirm one so far.

Much of the southern and western sections of the island are still without water, electricity and telecommunications service.

  13. It's a tragedy to know, that one of our beautiful Caribbean island, has been struck by such a devastating natural disaster. St.Lucia is a paradise in the sunlight, and a gem that glows in the darkness, stunningly beautiful. I'm not a Lucian, but Kittitian, who fell in love with the island, when I visited a long time ago. We as a Caribbean nation, share and feel your pain. On behalf of all Kittitians, living at home and abroad, we express our deepest sympathy, especially to the families who have lost love ones. May their souls rest in peace!

  22. Heart felt condolences to the persons, friends, families and St.Lucians as a whole affected by this tragedy. While people around the world enjoy Christmas, this is what we are faced with. I ask what message is God whispering to us and frankly I am not sure. I could come to my own conclusion, just like you can and either way, we need to pray much harder and have greater care for human life.

I have experienced every major hurricane St.Lucia has had from 1971 and over the last 42 years I have seen major improvements in all mechanical equipment from a basic telephone to a motor vehicle and more and I keep on thinking that something is wrong with the system.

We entrust our lives to certain major bodies and it hurts to see that the system continues to fail us. I beg the Government to utilize our tax monies wisely and please do not allow this callous, negligent behavior by NEMO to go unanswered. We are not weather officials, we do not work with NEMO, yes we have the internet but we all have our specific jobs to feed our families, please tell me why AGAIN NEMO did not make that information available to us so that business places would allow their employees to head home sooner so they would not be caught attempting to go home during the heat of the storm? Why can't NEMO be more proactive? We lost so many lives in hurricane TOMAS you would think that NEMO would be more prepared to avoid such a reoccurrence but it is obvious that they have not learnt from that Oct 2010 tragedy!!! We entrust our lives in the hands of all the stakeholders (government, police, doctors, teachers) and they need to give us the level of confidence to know for sure that we are getting relevant, reliable information. It really hurts to see that we are again given the sharp end of the knife to cling on to. Someone from NEMO needs to answer to the people of St.Lucia because they continue to fail us! Nothing happened after TOMAS and three years later there is still no system in place to identify, prepare and assist persons ahead of a natural disaster to safe guard our most important resources, our people. I looked at the system online and "my god" the system was very well developed and should have been identified in time if more care attention and due diligence was undertaken by NEMO. NEMO is wasting tax payers money and the Government must take affirmative action with NEMO. In other words, enough is enough, from the head of NEMO and all other parties who have some level of influence with NEMO needs to resign immediately!!!!

    • IDIOT NEMO IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR WEATHER FORECASTING, NEMO IS NOT THE MET OFFICE.HURRICANE SEASON JUST END AND YOU ALL WERE NOT PREPARED, I WAS PREPARED, SO IF WAS AN EARTHQUAKE OR TSUNAMI U DEPENDING ON NEMO. ONCE AGAIN WE MUST ALWAYS BE PREPARED, STLOP LITTERING, DISPOSE OF GARBAGE PROPERLY. AS HUMAN BEINGS WE SELF DESTRUCT AND WE BLAMING EVERYONE EXCEPT OURSELVES. I AM SURE MOST OF U WERE PREPARED FOR THE RED AND WHITE FETES AND ALLL THE OTHER FETES. PUT UR KNEES DOWN AND PUT GOD FIRST IN EVERYTHING STOP PUTTING POLITIONS FIRST.

      • Ea stop making excuses for NEMO. It IS NEMOs business and mandate to get the weather information and provide adequate warning to St Lucians, that is what our taxes are paying for. NEMO and MET office has the power to advise the Prime Minister to shut down the country. We may not have been able to stop the weather but if those agencies were doing what they are being paid to do the deaths and inconveniences would have been mitigated somewhat as people would or may have been better prepared. In this age of technology MET office or NEMO could have made a call to some agency overseas as an alternative to the " downed Radar system". NEMO and MET of all agencies should know something about BCP (Business Continuity Planning). So weather systems will stop their onslaught and wait for NEMO??. It is utter nonsense to believe that they could not get it elsewhere. I was able to see detailed information on Christmas Eve's weather online and told my friends and family and that is why none were caught up in the mess. It is obvious that you dont understand those things and are writing from a position of ignorance.

  25. Its a sad day for many. My heart goes out to those who lost their love ones and also those whose houses and properties got flooded. It is a sad day and let us not forget the farmers who feed us and have lost their crops. The bananas were looking good and on a recovery and this!!

I do however think that not many people can relate to the weather jargon. We need to put this formation out in simple layman terms.what is a trough? How much rain can be associated with a trough? How much rain can be associated with thunder storms. Some people may have different interpretations. The report never mentioned the real possibility of flooding and impassable roads. I experienced problems going to work on the morning christmas eve. When I saw the downpoor between 4 and 5pm I had no doubt we were heading for problems on the road to my home in MonRepos. I tried to move quickly by the time I passed some water by Desglos I realized it was impossible and had to return to the goodlands where I spent the night. We need to inform people of impending danger quickly and use the media effectively. Official warnings on such occurence should be swift. Had I not been warned by a truckdriver I might have been one of those stucked in their cars. When I saw this elderly lady trying to get home in that pooring rain it really hurt me.double C did a good job. However I believe official word must also come in quickly.

Let us learn to love each other, forgive each other, help each other and live in peace. Life is short and we can all go suddenly. May we help each other in time of need.

  45. You don't have to depend upon others to tell you about the weather. There are weather updates/radar on line. I check them every day. Also, if anyone needs to get to a village on the west coast, there are boats in the marina up north that are willing to help transport. Praying for all that were affected by this weather system.

  46. Thank God of BBM Messenger, that’s how I found out that our poor Helen was being attacked by severe weather. My prayers are with the families who have lost love ones, for those who worked so hard to build their house but now destroyed. Just to let you know that time is a perfect healer. Keep your knees down and GOD will surely see you through. Peace to all and Merry Christmas

  47. People you dont need to wait on NEMO and the met office. I can tell you for a fact nemo is VERY busy rescuing people and doing preliminary assessments. If you want updates on the weather, listen to your radio and goonlinefor those of you who have power. for the rest get on your pgonesand check the weather network or underground weather. For now I can only say that there is more rain to follow. As fo how much more, it is uncertain.
