Last season saw Haverigg Cricket Club suffered relegation from the North Lancs Premier Division, winning just three matches and finishing well adrift at the bottom of the table.
This term, excitement beckons in the North Lancashire and Cumbria Cricket League Division 1, with the addition to the Poolside team of 25-year-old Saint Lucian all-rounder Dalton Polius.
The Villagers kicked their season off with a 50-overs home fixture against the Workington CC A team, and the left hand bat and off-spinner – who has played for West Indies at the Under-19 level – made an immediate impact with both bat and ball.
Batting first in damp conditions due to overnight and early morning rain, Haverigg CC made 246/4. 46/0 after 10 overs, the Villagers openers set a good foundation for their overseas professional, coming in at one down.
Drew Postlethwaite, the skipper, made 44 at the top of the innings. But the fireworks started when “Dalti” came to the crease. He faced 124 balls in 104 minutes, ending on an unbeaten 106 runs.
Workington, in response, were all out for 170 in the 49th over. Connor Penrith led with the ball, taking 4-15, and Drew Postlethwaite captured 2-50 to follow up on his 31 with the bat. Dalti got 1-30.
After the match, Haverigg hosted An Evening With The Professional. Next week, the side has a provisional County Cup first round matchup, against Wigton CC.
