GIS – Minister for Sustainable Development, Energy, Science and Technology continues to advocate for Saint Lucia’s adaptation to climate change.
Speaking at a presentation ceremony held at the Ministry of the Public Service’s conference room on Friday, Dr. Fletcher commended the Caribbean Youth Environment Network (CYEN) for raising awareness among the nation’s young people.
“Let me say how pleased I am for the CYEN and the Saint Lucia chapter for the work that they did in putting together this petition. It makes our work in this ministry a lot easier. Climate change will be with us for the rest of our lives, because our climate has gotten warmer because of a lot of the industrial activity that’s taking place in developed countries. The fact that our young people have taken it upon themselves to go out and solicit petitions on this issue, I think is extremely commendable.”
CYEN Acting Vice President Virgini Sealys highlighted the purpose of the initiative.
“We had a declaration where we solicited ten thousand signatures from the Saint Lucian populace, informing them about climate change and its effects, and encouraging them to take action. We need our policy makers to do the same.”
The Declaration on Climate Change was signed by over two thousand Saint Lucians. Dr. Fletcher encouraged the representatives of CYEN to continue this initiative.
