Customers to pay more for electricity; gov’t increase in LUCELEC fuel levy takes effect

PRESS RELEASE –
An increase in the tax charged by the Government of Saint Lucia (GOSL) on fuel purchased by Saint Lucia Electricity Services Limited (LUCELEC) came into effect on June 16, 2014 when the statutory instrument for that purpose was published in the Saint Lucia Gazette.

Consequently, all fuel purchased by LUCELEC from Buckeye St. Lucia Terminal Limited since then has attracted a levy of fifty cents ($0.50) on every gallon. This increase in the levy will be reflected in customers’ bills beginning in July.

LUCELEC customers can expect a marginal increase in the fuel surcharge applied to electricity bills. For July bills that’s a difference of about 0.9 cents per unit (kilowatt hour).

Despite the adjustment, the fuel surcharge for July is minus 0.1 cents per unit, as the overall price paid for fuel by LUCELEC during the month of June was still marginally below the average price paid for fuel the previous year.

LUCELEC customers can see details of the basic tariff and fuel surcharge on their monthly electricity bills.

The increase in the fuel levy from 20 cents ($0.20) per gallon to 50 cents ($0.50) per gallon was announced by Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony during the presentation of the 2014/15 Budget Statement in May this year.

  1. Hmm, let's see, union demanded a rather ludicrous 30% wage increase. I wish I could get 1/10 of that! This is the usual nonsense that is driving away foreign investors. Lucelec countered with 4% then 6.5%. And people are wondering why the costs are going up?

  2. think 'lucians rel cheap', 'proud st lucian', 'robotic feelings' and 'are you being serious' may be right on the increase.   It's under one cent (one ninth of a cent).
$0.009 cent - is that it?

  3. How could making a decision about a political fgigure not be political. People should make their decision as to what they feel. If they figure that this guy (Kenny) has made economic blunders because in his failure to balance his budget then he should go. This happens in all civilized countries.

We the citizens had no say in the creation of his budget. We also elected him based on these competencies. If he can't perform then it is time to go. Why should we be peddling the stupid notion that it is us who created the crisis and we should not be political. This is utter RUBBISH. We are the drivers of this economy not any politician and if we say that you have bankrupt the nation or failed in balancing your budget then you need to go, so be it. We will deal with another person to sort things out. You can't be giving a sympathetic ear to the one who created the problem in the first place. We need to rebuild not place mortar and bricks on a broken foundation. And if this is political so be it. The PM is a political figure so he undertstands. He has already said that. Who are party hacks to say he is wrong? Fools. Do Whats Right

  4. Any increase regardless how small will affect us negatively. To those who say 2 less beers don't realise that a mother depending on her bar to send her children to school may have to close down. With Kenny bringing in NO INVESTMENT where will she work? TAKE OUT THE REDNESS IN YOUR EYES. I did that 2 years ago. Think of self then country.

    • Saint Lucians are so sickly stupid. In the midst of BLATANT leadership failure, even today they fail to judge the value of those they call leaders, on the body of WORK they have DONE IN THE PAST. The greater their failures or inexperience, the more QUALIFIED they become in Saint Lucians' eyes.

We even changed our constitution for a green horn. Now we are paying the price for our blatant stupidity.

SAINT LUCIANS are still caught in the TRAP of assessing people who push through and fancy themselves as representatives, as those of a particular skin colour, and have a PhD or some other type of degree. It looks like a degree even in Religious Knowledge would today still give you a very substantive edge!

Let's take a look at who heads both the UWP and SLP.

UWP's leader is quite a spectacular executive failure in terms of impact on related company bottom-line performance. The business, an airline, literally fell from the skies. That person too, never seemed to have had a chance of a snow-ball in Hell to be selected leader of a regional tourism group, after heading the ministry in the Tuxedo Affair with leakages from the Treasury, and with the legal judgement making critical reference to very dubious testimony given to that appellate court.

That one heading the SLP, on the other hand, has not done a single stroke of work EITHER in business, in management or in finance. Now, as elegant testimony to SPECTACULAR management skills, he is now sitting on a self-created BUDGET DEFICIT of $87 million, plus three, not one, not two, but three egregious financial blunders. Acquaintance with the law as a law lecturer, did not equip him either, to be alert to weaknesses in three EGREGIOUS FINANCIAL BLUNDERS in the related contracts he signed. The cost to this nation is a TOTAL LIABILITY which now stands at $271 million ($45 + $85 + $168 million, and counting. Plus, there are legal costs not yet quantified.

Does this nation have the smarts to detect fatal flaws and to choose otherwise, regarding the personalities that the very FLAWED executive branches of the respective parties REPEATEDLY chose?

Do we always have to return to, and lap up our own vomit?

    • Any way you look at it, this power company is out to just fleecing the consumers. Rabid capitalism and rape of the consumer is its first goal. Government is anti-worker. Companies are anti-consumer. What a f-inn screwed up country this is!

    • This man is a blasted curse upon the country. I see his khaki face and those like him and I turn off my TV. Now it is going to cost even more money to hear them talk even more shit. I cannot take the likes of him, not even in tiny doses. Bastards!
