Prime Minister Dr. Kenny D. Anthony visited the Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology in Havana on Wednesday. This is the center that developed a drug called Heberprot-P to treat diabetic ulcers.
This medicine is currently available to 100 percent of the Cuban population who develop diabetic ulcers and is also being used in Venezuela and Argentina.
In 2010, a clinical trial of the drug was conducted in Saint Lucia where eight patients with diabetic ulcers were treated with Heberprot-P. According to Cuban officials, the results showed that in each case, there was improvement in the condition of the patients.
Dr. Anthony continues to be concerned about the impact of diabetes on the health of the population. A study conducted by a Canadian urologist, Dr. Michael Graven in 2007, revealed that Saint Lucia had the highest incidence of diabetes per capita in the world (8.1 perent of the population). Another study undertaken in 2012, by British expert Dr. Ken Earl, revealed similar results.
Prime Minister Anthony has indicated that upon his return to Saint Lucia, consultations will be held with the Ministry of Health to determine the outcome of the clinical trials.
