PRESS RELEASE – It was more grief and disappointment for the players and fans of the VBCC Warlords as their hopes of championship glory will have to wait at least one more year after they were defeated by Courts Jets 61-40 last evening in the decisive Game 3 of the Premier League finals at the Beausejour Indoor Facility, Gros Islet.
Courts Jets, eyeing their fifth straight championship, had to rally back from a combination of a poor first-quarter showing and tenacious uptempo play early by their opponents, which VBCC led by as many as 12, but at the end of the first quarter had control up 15-4.
The four points equalled Jets’ lowest total scored in a quarter in this year’s tournament with the first incidentally coming in VBCC’s Game 2 win.
In the second quarter, Courts Jets seemed like a team possessed as they went on an 11-0 run to quickly erase that deficit and tie the game at 15 apiece. They raised their intensity on both ends of the court to bring themselves back in the game and take the lead 25-24 at the half-time interval.
In the third quarter, VBCC looked out of sorts on the offensive end, turning over possession to the Jets with several shot-clock violations and empty plays. While defensively they were able to limit Jets to a 14-point third quarter, Jets still entered the fourth with a 39-30 lead. A lead that they would not relinquish, as they took a firm stronghold on the game with clinical shooting in the fourth quarter from the entire team led by KFC Player of the Game Ron Dumurville, who hit 3 threes in a two-minute stretch to extend their lead to double digits over VBCC.
Courts Jets won convincingly in the end like true champions with a 61-40 rout of their opponents and win their fifth successive title.
KFC Player of the Game Ron Dumurville finished with figures of 18 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists, shooting (5/10) 50 percent from three-point range. Troy Louison was also big off the bench for Jets with 15 points and 4 rebounds.
For VBCC, Marcian Calderon was the lone player in double figures with a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds.
The curtains then came down on another successful KFC/National Basketball League tournament with the awards and trophy presentation for Premier League being handed out after the Jets/VBCC game. They were as follows:
